A conservation experiment that has provided a decade of learning how to revive and replenish New Zealand forest is about to be celebrated in Hawke's Bay at Boundary Stream Mainland Island.

Scientists visit Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake

This morning scientists from the Department of Conservation and GNS Science were able to visit Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake to ascertain what was left of the tephra dam that collapsed yesterday sending a lahar down the Whangaehu River. They were able to confirm that the tephra dam had had eroded back down to the hard rim and the pre 1995 lake outlet.

A visit on Thursday 8 February by DOC and Geological and Nuclear Sciences staff to Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake found the lake level was now at 1.4 metres from the top of the lake’s tephra dam, an increase of 0.1m from that recorded on the last visit.

Following a visit to Mt Ruapehu’s Crater Lake on 29 December, DOC staff have issued a warning over the hazardous nature of the tephra dam overlying the pre 1995-1996 lake outlet. The dam was formed from material ejected from the volcano during the eruptions of 1995 and 1996.
