The Department of Conservation works with iwi and hapū in almost all aspects of its work. Pou Kura Taiao in each conservancy stay in close contact with Māori communities.

Settlements

DOC plays an active role in the Treaty settlements process. Because of the importance to Māori of the land and other natural resources we administer, DOC is represented on each Crown negotiating team.

Kāhui Kura Taiao

Tōpuni

Tōpuni comes from the traditional Ngāi Tahu custom of rangatira extending their mana over areas by placing their cloaks over them. Tōpuni status confirms the overlay of Ngāi Tahu values on certain conservation areas.



The Department of Conservation has talked with tangata whenua about conservation policies and strategies. We have heard concerns about the issues that are of particular importance, and also the wider views about conservation matters. On the basis of those messages, we have been working to develop a range of policies that aim to enhance the ability of the department to build and support relationships with tangata whenua to achieve conservation outcomes for the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand.
