Land & freshwater - all regions
Wetlands are extensive and diverse on the Chatham Islands, where around 8.5 percent of New Zealand's threatened freshwater fish are found.
Located 800 kilometres south-east of Wellington, the Chatham Islands contain several of the world’s most threatened bird and plant species, including Chatham Island black robin and taiko.
Free of introduced predators and pests, Mangere and Rangatira island nature reserves in the Chatham Islands are refuges for rare and endemic species including the critically-endangered black robin.
Situated west of Pitt Island, Mangere Nature Reserve is a former farm now being actively revegetated. It is home to black robin, Chatham Islands snipe and Forbes' parakeets.
Rangatira Island is famous as one of the only places in the world supporting black robin, and for its vast population of seabirds.
