NZ sea lion management
Consultation closed: 3 December 2007 (extended from 29 October 2007)
Submissions were invited on two draft plans aimed at better management of the New Zealand sea lion:
- Draft Population Management Plan for New Zealand Sea Lions
- Draft New Zealand Sea Lion Species Management Plan: 2007-2017
Draft New Zealand Sea Lion Species Management Plan: 2007-2017
This draft Species Management Plan outlines options for guiding the Department of Conservation in its management of this species over the next 10 years and could replace the New Zealand (Hooker’s) Sea lion Recovery Plan (1995).
Recovery of the New Zealand sea lion to non–threatened status requires an increase in population size, distribution and breeding locations. The draft Species Management Plan examines a range of management, research and community relations initiatives to assist with achieving these objectives.
Your comments will be considered by the Department of Conservation.
Draft Population Management Plan for New Zealand Sea Lions
This draft Population Management Plan outlines options for managing the extent of incidental mortality of New Zealand sea lions from fishing through establishing a maximum allowable level of fishing-related mortality (MALFiRM) for all New Zealand fisheries waters (out to 200 nautical miles offshore) and possibly for a specific area of the Auckland Islands Squid Fishery (SQU6T).
Your comments will be included in a summary that will be provided by the Director-General of Conservation to the Minister of Fisheries and the New Zealand Conservation Authority.
