Canterbury CMS review on hold

The review of the Canterbury Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) is on hold until 2010.

National Office is reviewing the content and roles of CMS at the request of the Director-General of Conservation.

A workshop is being held in December with the New Zealand Conservation Authority (who give statutory approval to CMS) to provide input into this review.

More information about the future direction of CMS development will hopefully be available after this workshop.

For now, some of the background research will continue. This includes:

  • Research into Canterbury’s historical and cultural heritage
  • Research into changing public use patterns of public conservation land in Canterbury - People's benefit and enjoyment (PDF, 99K)
  • Finalisation of the draft Canterbury Aircraft Guidelines
  • Discussion papers on specific concession subjects, such as ski fields and private accommodation on public conservation land.
  • Public release of the pre-draft O Tu Wharekai place section, to be appended to the soon-to-be-released O Tu Wharekai (Ashburton Lakes/Upper Rangitata) recreation opportunities report.

All other ‘place’ chapters are also on hold.
