Summary

Sambar deer
Following extensive consultation by the department, the Minister of Conservation has made his decision regarding the future management of sambar deer in the Horowhenua / Manawatu / Rangitikei / Wanganui area.
A gazette notice revoking the current conditions has been published in the New Zealand Gazette, and came into force on the 14th May 2007.
Find the original discussion document and other related documents on this page, including submissions, landowner consultation, a summary of submissions and a map showing the specified area for recreational hunting of samba deer in the Manawatu and Wanganui areas.
Implications
As of the 14th May 2007 Sambar deer, like other deer species, can be hunted year round, provided hunters have the landowner’s permission.
The Department of Conservation is currently in discussion with the Sambar Deer Management Foundation (SDMF) over the administration of hunting permits in DOC coastal reserves. Hunting permits for all other DOC areas can be obtained from Department of Conservation offices.
