Tuhua (Mayor Island) lies between coastal and oceanic waters in the western Bay of Plenty. A marine reserve on the northern end of the island was established in January 1993 to protect marine organisms and their habitats for present and future generations.
A mix of over sixty reef fish species including subtropical species can be found in the reserve, which is bathed in the seasonal warm East Auckland Current.

Diving and snorkelling, boating and sailing are all encouraged within Tūhua (Mayor Island) Marine Reserve.
Landing on the island itself is by permission of the owners (Tūhua Trust Board). Cabin and tent accommodation can be booked by contacting the Tauranga DOC office.
Strict quarantine measures are in place on Tūhua. You must contact the Tūhua Island caretaker before visiting the island.
