The Hapuawhenua Viaduct was one of the final components in completing the North Island main trunk rail, and is now linked into the Old Coach Road through a new section of track.Location: Access to the Old Coach Road is from either Ohakune or Horopito. Visitors in Ohakune can either start their journey at the historic Ohakune railway station, or the Marshalls Road car park about a five minute drive from Ohakune Junction. From Horopito you can access the track from Matapuna road.
Bring your mountain bike or 4-wheel drive to Tongariro Forest in Taupo, or come to simply observe the multitude of threatened species residing in the 'forest of the future'.Alert: 42 Traverse conditions: The 42 Traverse is closed for 4WD vehicle access from 1 May to 1 December. Location: Tongariro Forest Conservation Area stretches from National Park in the south to the Waituhi Saddle in the north and lies between Tongariro National Park and Owhango.
