Trout fishing on Lake Taupo
The Taupo trout fishery is a 'year-round' fishery providing exciting winter river fishing and excellent summer fishing on the lake. Within a relatively small geographic area, anglers can enjoy a variety of fishing styles depending on the time of the year and their preferred chosen method.
Also within the same area is a variety of landscapes - from fishing the strong currents and pools of the Tongariro River, to summer boat fishing on Lake Taupo, or the complete solitude of Lake Kuratau. Anglers can enjoy lots of variety when pursuing trout at Taupo.
The rainbow and brown trout of Lake Taupo and its tributaries provide 30-40 per cent of the country’s freshwater sports fishing. The lake and river beds are owned by Ngati Tuwharetoa who also have the sole rights to take indigenous fish from these waters.
