Despite not having a national park to call its own the Waikato region is still a major provider of recreational opportunities.
Coromandel Peninsula and the Waitomo Caves are among the highest visitor use areas in New Zealand, while Pirongia and Pureora Forest Parks cater for hunters, trampers and campers. Farm Park camp grounds, the Kauri Trail and Pinnacles hut in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames provide a variety of opportunities.
In the Waikato area you can explore Mt Karioi, Mt Pirongia or the Kaniwhaniwha Caves in Pirongia Forest Park.
Whether visiting Waikawau Bay, spending a leisurely weekend at the Port Jackson Campground or taking a walk on the Coromandel Coastal Walkway, there are numerous and varied recreational activities available in the Hauraki area.
One of the main attractions in the Maniapoto area is the Ruakuri Caves and Bush Scenic Reserve. Just 2 km from the world-renowned Waitomo glowworm cave the reserve protects several significant natural and cultural features. You can also visit Pureora Forest Park with its tall trees, clear rivers and rare wildlife.
