Getting there

The Manginangina Kauri Walk is signposted from SH10 south of Kaeo and north of Waipapa. The walk can also be reached from SH1, north of Okaihau.

Please take care when you leave the State Highway as you will be travelling on unsealed roads. The walk is 5 min drive from the Puketi Recreation Area on Waiare Rd.

Description

Boardwalk, Manginangina Kauri Walk

This short boardwalk is one of Northland’s icon sites providing an outstanding experience. The track winds through a mature stand of kauri, swamp forest and associated vegetation. Interpretive panels assist with the understanding and enjoyment of this special forest ecosystem.

Puketi Recreation Area

This is a standard campsite in the Bay of Islands area.

Puketi cabins

Puketi cabins are nestled in a forest alive with the calls of native birds. There are good short walks in the area and mountain biking opportunities on former logging roads. A large grass area in front of the cabins is ideal for group activities.

Puketi Forest Hut

Set in the Puketi Recreation area of the Puketi-Omahuta Forest, one of the largest continuous tracts of native forest in Northland. You need to book this hut.

Plan and prepare

No dogs or fires due to risks to wildlife.

What to expect on an easy access short walk:

Easy walking for up to an hour
Track is well formed, with an even surface. Few or no steps or slopes
Suitable for people of all abilities and fitness
Stream and river crossings are bridged
Walking shoes required
