Getting there

The track starts at the Roys Peak Track carpark, 6 km from the Wanaka township on the Mt Aspiring road.

Description

This challenging tramp begins with the track to Roys Peak. From the peak, follow the ridge line over Mt Alpha and descend through snow tussock to a 4WD track. Then follow the poled route beside Spotts Creek to the Cardrona Road, 10 km from Wanaka township.

This track is prone to low cloud and is not recommended in poor weather or during the winter.

This track crosses private land. Please respect the landowner’s property and livestock - no dogs or bikes.

The access via Roys Peak Track is closed for lambing from the 1 October - 10 November inclusive.

What to expect on a tramping track:

  • Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
  • Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
  • Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
  • Tramping/hiking boots required
